Cooperage
The craft of barrel-making is a cornerstone of Yalumba’s identity, with over a century of tradition behind it. Yalumba is the only winery in the Southern Hemisphere with an operational on-site cooperage. Here, the head cooper transforms carefully selected oak into barrels, imparting distinctive flavours, complexity, and aroma to Yalumba wines.

”Excellent guide. Biking was flat and mostly on cycle paths. Wine tasting, stops at chocolate factory and cheese shop were first class. Lunch, tasting and tour especially of the cooper’s (wine barrel maker) workshop at Yalumba were also first class. We highly recommend

Yalumba’s Story
Founded by British brewer Samuel Smith, who immigrated to Australia in 1847, Yalumba has remained family-owned since its inception. The Hill-Smith family has embraced innovative horticultural practices for six generations, emphasising minimal interference in vine cultivation to highlight the best of the Barossa region. After purchasing a 30-acre plot in Angaston, Samuel Smith established Yalumba, naming the property after an indigenous Australian term meaning “all the land around.” The first vineyards were planted in 1849, marking the beginning of the Yalumba legacy. Initially known for fortified wines, Yalumba is now recognised as Australia’s oldest family-owned winery.
Yalumba’s Place in the Barossa
Yalumba’s commitment to the Barossa region is symbolised by its imposing marble and sandstone clock tower, representing its long-term vision. The winery continues the proud tradition of barrel crafting at its unique cooperage, while progressive horticultural practices have laid the groundwork for sustainable viticulture. The Hill-Smith family works to minimise Yalumba’s environmental footprint, implementing an extensive solar system and earning 43 awards for sustainable practices. Recognised with the International Award of Excellence for Sustainable Wine Growing and the International Green Apple Gold Award, Yalumba aims to produce exceptional wines with minimal intervention for future generations.
